Maintenance: The Boring But Critical Part

Daily Routine (Post-Shot)

  • Knock: Empty the puck immediately.
  • Flush: Run water through the group head for 2-3 seconds.
  • Wipe: Use a dedicated cloth to wipe the dispersion screen.
  • Purge: If you steamed milk, purge the wand and wipe immediately.

Weekly Routine (Backflushing)

If your machine has a 3-way solenoid valve (like the Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, or Breville Bambino Plus), you need to backflush.

  1. Insert blind basket (the one with no holes).
  2. Add Cafiza or heavy duty espresso detergent.
  3. Run the pump for 10 seconds, rest for 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times.
  4. Rinse and repeat with just water.

Monthly/Yearly (Descaling)

Scale buildup is the #1 killer of espresso machines. Use a commercial descaler (not vinegar, which leaves a smell) every 2-6 months depending on your water hardness.
